Tourism on the Sunshine Coast of BC
There is opportunity for growth on the Sunshine Coast. I saw a program on our local channel the other night with Sandra Cunningham hosting a discussion about tourism on the Sunshine Coast. Tourism booms in the summer but winter months are quite slow. Ideas for promoting the Sunshine Coast in the “off season” were discussed. Dakota Ridge Winter Recreation area is known by experts as one of the best cross country ski areas in the lower mainland. I first learned about the great skiing available, and only 1/2 hour drive away, when I had guests stay in one of my accommodations a couple years ago. Scuba diving is another sport that even many locals don’t recognize we have so nearby. The HMCS Chaudiere is sunk off Kunechin Point in Sechelt Inlet with lines attached to guide divers. An abundance of fish can be seen at the Tuwanek Point Marine Part also in Sechelt Inlet.
Starting a small business on the Sunshine Coast, BC
Community Futures Development Corporation on the Sunshine Coast was discussed on local tv by 4 of its board members. It is a non-profit organization that is funded by both federally and provincially. The organization was set up to provide support and counselling and aid new business owners in developing a business plan to seek financial aid in the traditional manner through banks. If they entrepreneur is refused funding Community Futures is available to assist in this manner.
Moving to the Sunshine Coast, BC, Canada
It appears that over the years more people are considering a move to Gibsons or Sechelt on the Sunshine Coast to escape the hustle and bustle of Vancouver. It is only a 40 minute ferrry ride on BC ferries from Horseshoe Bay to Langdale ferry terminal in Gibsons. It seems that there is an increasing number of people who prefer an alternative lifestyle where they can live and work from home and enjoy the benefits of small community living.
Some individuals, especially young people, are able to pick up and make a move easily from another location. These people often look for smaller furnished suites or cottages as a way to get started with their new life on the Sunshine Coast. Many first arrive to the Sunshine Coast unsure of where to begin. The local paper, the Coast Reporter, can be found in print or online ( http://www.coastreporter.net ) when looking for jobs and accommodations even prior to moving. Or the employment center in Sechelt is great place to begin a search for employment ( http://www.scces.ca/page2238.htm ).
Others moving to the Sunshine Coast have jobs lined up already or are called upon for particular work related tasks for specific lengths of time. These people need accommodations, again usually furnished suites or cottages best suit their needs.
Housing starts have been up the last several years as new retirees or families decide to build and move to the Sunshine Coast. These people are also in the market for accommodations during the building process.
The Sunshine Coast is full of activity with abundant events during the summer. It is tricky to make a move to Gibsons or Sechelt during the busy tourist season because many accommodations are rented by the night or week during the summer. However, it is a good opportunity to make a move in September when things slow down. Cottage owners from Vancouver and the lower mainland are more willing to rent their places out for the winter.
